Edel's work contributes to these SDGs

SDG 2,3,4,10.12.13.17

Edel's research is focused on the application of discrete choice experiments, economic evaluation and econometrics in Health and Environmental Economics. She has worked on projects in the areas of obesity, chronic pain, vaccinations, dementia, mental health, population health, recreation and agri-environment schemes..

Key target: 3.4 Reduce mortality from non-communicable diseases and promote mental health

Edel has worked with many Irish public sector organisations such as safefood, where she researched overweight and obesity and examined the impact of weight status on health and non-health-related outcomes. She also worked on the Cherish study funded by the Health Research Board. This study aimed to help reduce the risk of childhood overweight and obesity by promoting healthy infant feeding practices among primary caregivers.

With the Environmental Protection Agency, Edel has researched adaptation and attitudes to climate-related risks.

We know that completing an energy renovation on your home will make it more energy efficient and reduce your energy bill. The HAVEN project aims to investigate other co-benefits of renovation such as the impact on health and wellbeing via changes in exposure at home due to changes in indoor air quality. The Health Impact Assessment of Deep Energy Renovations on Irish Domestic Dwellings HAVEN project measures a number of air pollutants before the renovation work and at 12 months after the renovation work to determine any changes in the pollutant levels and the health-related benefits including the health economic benefits of energy renovations.

Teaching

Economics of Public Policy Designed to provide the analytical foundations for an exploration of the balance between private and public resource allocation in modern economies, specifically, exploring how markets can allocate resources efficiently and instances where markets fail to achieve efficient allocation of resources. The module also explores the role of government in the allocation of goods and services. We also examine the economic philosophies that underpin welfare states in modern economies. In this module teaching cases are used, which have marks attributed to in-class contributions, enabling student-led discussions on topics such as the introduction of Carbon Tax in British Columbia.

Focused on Targets: 13 Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts, 13.3 Improve education, awareness-raising and human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and early warning; 4.0 Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all; 10 Reduce inequality within and among countries, 10.2 By 2030, empower and promote the social, economic and political inclusion of all, irrespective of age, sex, disability, race, ethnicity, origin, religion or economic or other
status; 3.0 Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages
